Embark on an unforgettable journey with our 8-day Iceland Adventure designed exclusively for high school students! Students will immerse in a dynamic blend of scientific exploration and leadership development amidst the breathtaking landscapes of Iceland. From delving into the mysteries of geology and volcanology to studying renewable resources and cultural anthropology, every moment is an opportunity for discovery. Course learning objectives:

  1. Develop proficiency in field research techniques, including species identification and biodiversity assessment, through hands-on exploration of Icelandic ecosystems.

  2. Gain insight into cultural anthropology by engaging with local communities, learning about Icelandic traditions, and examining the intersection of culture and environment.

  3. Enhance geographical and geological analysis skills through studying Iceland's unique landscape features, such as glaciers, volcanoes, and geothermal areas.

  4. Learn photography techniques to effectively capture and document field observations, cultural experiences, and natural landscapes.

  5. Acquire navigation skills necessary for safe exploration in rugged terrain, including map reading, GPS navigation, and orienteering. Students will gain a greater understanding of the field of GIS by practicing field data collection techniques.

  6. Understand principles of risk management and apply strategies to mitigate potential hazards encountered during outdoor activities, such as hiking and wilderness exploration.

  7. Explore concepts of environmental and tourism sustainability by examining Iceland's approach to conservation, eco-tourism initiatives, and sustainable development practices.

  8. Cultivate leadership skills through experiential learning activities focused on self-discovery, goal setting, teamwork, effective communication, and building confidence in leadership roles.

Enrollment process

This field course is offered on a first come/first served basis so we encourage you to sign up early! Once you complete the registration form you will receive a call from one of our staff so we can learn more about you and what you are hoping to gain from the experience and answer any questions you may have. You will then receive a link to the groups expedition page with flight info, medical forms, the packing list, and payment info. The group will be holding several meetings over zoom prior to the expedition to meet each other and prepare for the expedition ahead.

program travel Costs: $2,950

What’s included: The travel fee covers lodging, supplies, food, local transportation, and access to educational, natural history, and cultural centers. Basically, once we pick you up at the airport in Iceland you would not have to spend a penny unless you would like to purchase souvenirs.

What’s not included: Airfare transportation to Iceland is not included. We are more than happy to help you book your flight. Flights typically start at $450 depending on your location. We will meet you at the Keflavik airport (airport code KEF) with our company shirts on and a sign that says, “Global Treks.”

THE research base

The team shares a research base located in a house right outside the village of Selfoss. Six bedrooms and two bathrooms will be shared (2-4 researchers per bedroom): women, men, and guides will be in separate bedrooms. Two vehicles will be used for group transport for hikes, activities, interviews and/or meetings.
