Apostle Islands Internship
The Apostle Islands are an archipelago of 22 islands off the north shore of Wisconsin in Lake Superior. The Islands are known for known for their natural beauty including sandstone sea caves, virgin hardwood forests, pristine beaches, and crystal clear water. You can find numerous trails, lighthouses, docks, shipwrecks, and safe anchorages. The islands are also an excellent location to observe the stars as well as the northern lights as light pollution is nonexistent. No sailing experience needed!
How this internship works:
Based on your background and academic interest, we will help you narrow your project goals to a corresponding section of the visitor's guide.
You generate your section from active research at home and information collected in the field during your 5 day sailing expedition.
Each member of the team will contribute their section to the final visitor's guide that will be published at the conclusion of the summer.
Possible project ideas:
Field guide to the local plants and animals of the region.
Complete a documentary film about the team's journey.
Develop a natural history guide to the Islands.
Collect GIS data for hiking trails and/or sailing anchorage locations.

What this internship offers you:
1. Become a contributing author in a Global Treks Research Publication.
2. Experience designing, researching, collecting, and synthesizing data while working alongside university faculty and professional scientists.
3. Opportunities to conduct interviews with local experts on the area's history, geology, natural/cultural resources, and local Native Tribe.
4. Experience living aboard a sailboat for one week while sailing through the Apostles Islands.
5. Gain hands-on action research experience to share with future employers and friends.
The sailboat:
Each boat has at least 3 cabins, 1-2 bathrooms, main living space and kitchen.
Cabins each hold up to 2 people, have comfortable mattresses, electricity, and storage areas.
All sailing takes place within sight of the Islands, and nights are spent in quiet anchorages.
No prior sailing experience necessary; the boats are user-friendly and extremely stable.
Position Details
6 Positions available. We are looking for students in all majors. Focus areas include wildlife, plants, marine life, natural history, tourism, economics, documentary making, and GIS.
Mobile Research from any location (3 months/10 hours per week)
Action Research in the Apostle Islands (5 days- Scheduled for July 1-5).
Interested in earning college credit? We will work with your university to ensure that you receive 3-6 credits for your contribution to the field guide. Credits can be applied to spring/summer/fall semester. Site specific field work will be conducted on the trip in July.
Program Costs: $1,625
Program fee covers lodging, sailboat charter, a licensed U.S.C.G captain, supplies, and food.
*Transportation costs to Bayfield, WI marina not covered. If you are flying in we can help book your flights. We can also meet you at the Minneapolis airport to pick you up.
