Students, recent graduates, and professionals are welcome to join us for an immersive week of learning numerous hands-on field survey techniques and observing natural processes while traveling through Iceland’s natural wonders. Through a variety of multidisciplinary surveys, participants will learn to design and implement scientific investigations, honing their abilities to observe, measure, and analyze natural phenomena. These experiences provide valuable skills to add to your resume and help you stand apart while applying to jobs or graduate programs.

skills you will learn

1. Plant surveys using transect, quadrant, and observational survey techniques. Learn about cultural and medicinal plants, native plants, and invasive species. Also learn about the different types of habitats and ecosystems present in Iceland.

2. Wildlife surveys and identification. Work with the local organizations learning their approaches to bird and aquatic life surveys and techniques. Utilize observational surveys to document the common wildlife of Iceland.

3. Geospatial (GIS) mapping techniques using GPS receivers paired with multiple smart phone data collection apps. Learn to operate drones to map out ecosystems.

4. Learn about the dynamic geological structures present in Iceland including, volcanos, glacial rivers, basalt columns, black sand beaches, hot springs and geothermal rivers, rift zones, and earthquakes and how Icelanders have adapted to living in such an active geologic region.

5. Discover and understand Iceland’s practices in sustainability. Tour geothermal and hydroelectric power plants to learn about utilization of renewable energy as well as the latest technology to sequester carbon.

6. Observe and document first hand tourism impacts on the Icelandic culture and the environmental.

Enrollment process

This field course is offered on a first come/first served basis so we encourage you to sign up early! Once you complete the registration form you will receive a call from one of our staff so we can learn more about you and what you are hoping to gain from the experience and answer any questions you may have. You will then receive a link to the groups expedition page with flight info, medical forms, the packing list, and payment info. The group will then hold meetings over zoom to meet each other and prepare for the survey methods that will be utilized.

program travel Costs: $2,700

What’s included: The travel fee covers lodging, supplies, food, local transportation, and access to educational, natural history, and cultural centers. Basically, once we pick you up at the airport in Iceland you would not have to spend a penny unless you would like to purchase souvenirs.

What’s not included: Airfare transportation to Iceland not included. We are more than happy to help you book your flight. Flights typically start at $450 depending on your location. We will meet you at the Keflavik airport (airport code KEF) with our company shirts on and a sign that says, “Global Treks.”

*We are happy to assist with scholarship applications and working with your university in order to receive credit.

THE research base

The team shares a research base located in a house right outside the village of Selfoss. Six bedrooms and two bathrooms will be shared (2-4 researchers per bedroom): women, men, and guides will be in separate bedrooms. Two vehicles will be used for group transport for hikes, activities, interviews and/or meetings.
